New First aid at Work regulations

The new regulation for First Aid at work come into force on the 1st October 2009

Anyone can do first aid, you are limited only by your training, resources and access to help.  There is a statutory obligation on employers to provide trained first aiders in the workplace.

The standard HSE course used to be the 4 day First Aid at Work, backed up be an emergency first aid qualification (appointed person) which took one day.  These days there is less heavy industry and help can be summoned quickly using mobile phones, so a major revision in the First aid course has taken place

The new regulations keep the two tier system, but the courses are new.

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is a 6 hour course seen as appropriate to low-risk environments.

First Aid at Work (FAW) is now a three day (18 hour) course, appropriate for workers in hazardous and remote sites where risks are higher, outcomes more erious, and help may be delayed.

To keep you up to date with changes in legislation, the HSE also recommends a 3 hour annual update course for first aiders.

Northern Lights training can provide HSE certificated training for the new courses, and advise on the appropriate course for your busines.  Please contact us either by phone on 0796 883 8346 or via the contact form here to discuss your requirements.

HSE website link to the new legislation is here.

Outdoor First Aid courses; 20/21 July, 8/9 August and 5th 6th September, all near Preston, Lancashire

This is the course to re-validate your National Governing Body awards - SPA, ML, BCU, MBL, WGL etc - but who says it’s only the leaders who need to know First Aid?  If you are ever out in the hills or on the water and away from immediate medical support, this course is for you.

We differ from ’standard’ first aid on a couple of crucial ways - first of all the outdoors is our classroom and much of the teaching takes place in environments close to those in which you will be operating (not literally!).  Secondly it’s hand-on,  you learn by doing and practicing.

These courses are always a lot of fun, and thought provoking too.  We have excellent feed-back on how even previously qualified first aiders have gained from what we do.  The course costs £120 for the weekend, and the qualification lasts three years - money and time well spent when you consider the difference it can make - life or death!  Contact Jason via the contact page for more details and a booking form.  Hope to see you soon.
